Numbers (Preview)
Date: 1446-1406 BC
Author: Moses
Audience: Ancient Israelites
The first word in the Hebrew text means “in the wilderness”, which appropriately gives us the setting for the events of this book. The Book of Numbers covers a large portion of the forty years that Israel spent in the wilderness after their exile in Egypt.
When the people were obedient to God, they enjoyed His blessing and protection, but their disobedience brought His judgement. Despite the signs and wonders that God performed on Israel’s behalf, the people were ready to return to Egypt on several occasions because of their unbelief. It was easier to get Israel out of Egypt than to get Egypt out of the Israelites!
During this forty year period of time in the wilderness, God removed the generation that failed to trust Him, molding the new generation into a unified nation, prepared to conquer the land He had promised them.
