The Rule of the Levites
At this point in time, the Israelites are at Mount Sinai. They are making ready and dedicating the Tabernacle, which holds the ark of the covenant.
Numbers 8:1-2,4 (NASB) - “Then the Lord spoke to Moses, saying, “Speak to Aaron and say to him, ‘When you mount the lamps, the seven lamps will provide light in the front of the lampstand.’” …Now this was the workmanship of the lampstand, hammered work of gold; from its base to its flower ornamentation it was hammered work; according to the pattern which the Lord had shown Moses, so he made the lampstand.”
After the lamps are raised up to be placed onto the candlestick (the menorah), the Lord says, the Levites must be “raised up” to Him.
Numbers 8:6-7 - “Take the Levites from among the children of Israel, and cleanse them. And thus shalt thou do unto them, to cleanse them: Sprinkle water of purifying upon them, and let them shave all their flesh, and let them wash their clothes, and so make themselves clean.”
The Levites are to be clean from head to toe. They are to bring a meal offering, sin offering, and burnt offering, and then they are brought to the Tent of Meeting. The tribal leaders then “lay their hands upon the Levites.” Aaron declares that the Levites are Israel’s “raised” offering to the Lord. (7-13)
Numbers 8:13-17 - “And thou shalt set the Levites… unto the Lord. Thus shalt thou separate the Levites from among the children of Israel: and the Levites shall be mine… For they are wholly given unto me from among the children of Israel… even instead of the firstborn of all the children of Israel… For all the firstborn of the children of Israel are mine, both man and beast: on the day that I smote every firstborn in the land of Egypt I sanctified them for myself.”
We have seen this several times now: the Lord says that the firstborn son of all Israel belongs to Him, because the Lord struck down every firstborn son in Egypt. Human life is precious to the Lord, so this was a terrible sacrifice. To make up for it, the Lord claimed the lives of every firstborn of the Israelites, those whom He saved.
In theory, every firstborn Israelite son should serve the Lord in the Tabernacle. Instead, the firstborn are “redeemed” (exchanged for something of equal value) for the Levites. Seeing the Levites serving as priests would constantly remind the people of the great sacrifice the Lord made to redeem Israel from Egypt.
Numbers 8:24-26 (NASB) - “This is what applies to the Levites: from twenty-five years old and upward they shall enter to perform service in the work of the tent of meeting. But at the age of fifty years they shall retire from service in the work and not work anymore. They may, however, assist their brothers in the tent of meeting, to fulfill an obligation, but they themselves shall do no work. In this way you shall deal with the Levites in their obligations.”
The Levites shall work in the Tent of Meeting from age 25 to 50, then they shall retire. Retired Levites can still help by standing guard over the Tent of Meeting along with the younger Levites, but they shall do no more work.
