The book of Hebrews is divided into two major sections:
- Doctrinal issues (Hebrews 1-10:18)
- Practical living (Hebrews 10:19-13:25)
With the destruction of the Second Temple in Jerusalem by the Romans in 70 AD, the book of Hebrews answers an important question: What does Judaism look like without the Temple?
The rabbis believed that Judaism would continue through individual obedience to the Torah: with prayer and good deeds replacing Temple sacrifices. The Jewish author of Hebrews is making the same case using Jesus: in Christ, we also no longer have a need for sacrifice in the physical Temple.
The book of Hebrews explains that there was no more need for a priest to intercede before God on an individual’s behalf, since Christ’s death provided believers direct access to God’s throne. Furthermore, the blood of Christ now continually takes away sin.
