Galatians (Preview)
Date: 50-56 AD Author: The Apostle Paul Audience: Gentile Believers
The purpose of the Book of Galatians is to combat the heresy taught by teachers, called “Judaizers”, that these Gentile believers could not be true Christians until they submitted to the Jewish ordinance of circumcision. Futhermore, they maintained that the Galatians must adhere to the Law of Moses. In this way they believed that the work of Christ on the cross was considered insufficient for salvation.
Main Sections of Galatians:
- Paul first establishes his apostolic authority (1 - 2:14)
- Paul proves that men are justifed by faith in Christ’s atoning work, rather than by the works of the Law (2:15 - 4:15)
- Paul discusses what it means to be led by the Spirit (5:16 - 6:10)
